In May , Prince Charles opened a new ten-bedroom bed and breakfast in the grounds of the castle, the Granary Lodge. The couple stay at the beautifully-restored farmhouse during their annual summer tour of Wales, and bought the residence in March following Charles' year search for the perfect Welsh property. The two barn conversions on the grounds are available to rent when not in use by the royals.
Sandringham is the Queen's country estate, where she visits for the Christmas holidays each year. The house has been the private home to four generations of sovereigns since , and was inherited by the Queen in Her Majesty travels to Sandringham shortly before Christmas, and stays there until February every year, after privately marking the anniversary of her father's death. It's also where Prince Harry and Prince William learned of their mother's tragic death in When the royal family is in residence, Balmoral is closed, but they do offer guided tours on several dates throughout the winter.

The property offers several accommodations that are available for bookings year-round although not during the royal visit. The royals aren't the only "special residences" of Balmoral. The castle grounds are also home to an endangered species of red squirrels. Per the Balmoral website, "The red squirrel is one of Scotland's favourite mammals but it is declining in numbers and classified as an endangered species.
