Can you reuse processors

But when you do reuse old computer parts, you'll want to be aware of what you're getting into, as you can't just reuse anything and everything. Technically, it may be possible to potentially reuse any old computer part that you find in your hands, so long as it's compatible, but that doesn't mean you should reuse it.

Some components are better suited for reuse than others. Firstly, the most common parts to consider reusing for your new build are obviously going to be peripherals like your keyboard, mouse, mousepad, monitor, speakers, and headset. Other parts like motherboards, CPUs, graphics cards and RAM may also be fair game, but it's going to completely depend on what your new build is, how old your parts are, what condition they're in, whether they were thrashed a lot ie if the CPU has been overclocked beyond the end's of the Earth , and so on.

There's no hard fast rule for reusing PC parts, so you must make your own judgement call based on your particular situation. Generally speaking though, you probably want to avoid reusing the crucially important core components that will make up your new build such as your motherboard and CPU if they are many years old besides, they are probably too outdated to consider anyway.

But again, it all depends and there are always exceptions to the rule. Let's go over a few things to consider when reusing some of the more commonly reused parts. Whether you can technically reuse a CPU or not will depend on the specific CPU in question and the motherboard you plan on buying. But whether you should reuse a CPU in the first place, it's only a good idea if it's relatively modern, say less than years old.

An old top of the line processor eg an Intel Core i7 is likely going to be just fine today for many games especially for less demanding titles , but if it's an old mid-tier or budget-level processor, you should probably just give it a miss. To get a sense of how well an old CPU is going to perform in the titles of today, do a search on YouTube or Google for recent gaming benchmarks using that specific CPU, as many people enjoy comparing old CPUs to new ones.

Since every gamer and his goat seems to do benchmarks on YouTube these days, you can find benchmarks for almost any type of CPU these days, no matter how old. Overall though, for most people you are almost always better off just choosing a new CPU for your PC build , as using an old CPU will limit you to an older motherboard chipset that may be obsolete for modern features or that may be obsolete soon.

Of course CPUs always get faster with time, but in a relative price vs performance sense, CPUs are generally cheaper nowadays super fierce competition between Intel and AMD these days is one reason for that. Apr 10, 14, 3 41, Possibly even the RAM, although you won't want to.

Thanks Proximon, is there something wrong with the parts, like the RAM won't work. I heard somewhere the bios is tied to the CPU so it woudn't work. Your Dell computer could have come with several different processors. I'm guessing yours came with one of the better ones? It's not a good CPU by modern standards, but if you need to build a better platform for future upgrades you can certainly reuse the CPU.

You might need to replace the cooler on the CPU The CPU will have a built in memory controller that will determine what speed ram you can pair with it.

Possibly Mhz will be what you can do.. Apr 7, 8, 15 30, Thanks for the help, since i just want to reuse the parts and buy a cheap AM2 board and a new case for better airflow. My slimline dells sucks for getting decent airflow. I will upgrade the ram tho. May 16, 8, 0 31, Word processing and internet browsing? If that is the main use of your PC, I don't understand your line of thinking. All I would do is upgrade the RAM to 2 gig of inexpensive memory, buy more of the same you already have.
